From the Mayor’s Office: Good afternoon everyone! Hope you’re doing well and enjoying your Friday. I have quite a few things to share this week, so let’s get right to it. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to serve as emcee for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. It was a great turnout and a powerful reminder of just how many families are touched by this disease. Thank you to everyone who came out, raised money, volunteered and helped make the day such a success. I also had the honor of swearing in three newly promoted members of the Elyria Fire Department this week. Congratulations to Daniel Budzar, promoted to Assistant Chief; Jared Sukey, promoted to Captain; and Adam Wunderle, promoted to Lieutenant. Thank you all for your continued service to Elyria. This week we also celebrated Dee Tolbert, longtime president of Metro Central Ohio Unit NAACP, as she prepares for retirement. I was proud to present Dee with a proclamation recognizing her many years of service. She has given a tremendous amount to this community, so please join me in thanking her for everything she has done and wishing her the very best in retirement. Work continues at our new Public Works Complex, and every time I stop out there it seems like something else has changed. Things are really coming along. This is a huge project and I'm excited to see it all come together. I also met with Kevin Flanigan this week and got an update on the Forge 417 project. It looks like the apartments are closed to being finished, and the team is working on securing the restaurant. The building is looking fantastic from the outside too! A big thank you to our HR team for all the work that went into planning and putting together our annual Employee Health Fair. It was a great opportunity for our employees to get some important health information and learn more about the resources available to them. Starting Tuesday, City Hall will be hosting the Silent Witness Exhibit in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The exhibit honors victims of domestic violence and helps bring attention to an issue that affects far too many families. If you’re at City Hall, I encourage you to take a few minutes to see it. In case you missed it, Scrammy’s on Chestnut Ridge is officially open! They’re a new breakfast and lunch spot here in Elyria, and we were happy to celebrate their ribbon cutting today. They are located right next to Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard - check them out soon! Tomorrow, Charlie’s 2nd Annual Vet Fest will be in Ely Square from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is organized by Charlie’s Wishes for Veterans, a local nonprofit that supports veterans and their families. There will be a number of vendors on the Square, so stop down, enjoy the day and show some support for our veterans. Also, don’t forget about the Elyria Police vs. Elyria Fire charity softball game next Saturday, October 17, at noon at West Park, Field 2. We’ll be collecting food donations for the Southside Freedge, so if you’re coming out to watch, bring a donation along if you’re able. It should be a fun afternoon for a great cause. This is a long one, so I think I'll leave it there. Thanks for reading. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Take care, Mayor Kevin Brubaker
